An old temple on the Kumano Kaido
Built by order of Emperor Temmu in 679.
The founder, Dosho, was a high priest who studied abroad as part of a mission to Tang China, and is said to have received teachings from the Chinese monk on whom Tang Sanzang of Journey to the West is based.
A precious two-faced stone Buddha, believed to be from the time of construction, remains within the grounds.
