Think of the distant Kumano
Between the 10th and 13th centuries, many ‘Oji’ were built along the Kumano Kaido as ritual sites to perform prayers. It is said that there were three Oji within the city, one of which being ‘Shindachi Ichinose Oji’ In Shindachi Makino.
Kumano Kaido・Midori no Ichirizuka
In 2018, at the site of Shindachi Ichinose Oji, the new ‘Kumano Kaido・Midori no Ichirizuka’ was established. In the Edo period, all Kaido (roads) had milestones every 1 ri (about 3.927 km), which served as landmarks for travelers as well as a place to take a short rest during their journey.
