The best place to see hydrangeas of Sennan! (Hydrangea Temple)

An old temple said to have been built under the orders of Emperor Shomu in the first half of the 8th century.
It is known affectionately as the Hydrangea Temple, due the hydrangeas that decorate it in June every year.

Temple origins

The temple dates back to 1577, when the Kannon-do Hall, which is said to have survived when the entire area was burned down during Oda Nobunaga’s attack on Kishu, was moved to its present location.
At present the temple grounds are lined with buildings from various eras, and that splendour is the best in the city. Also, from the elevated grounds you have a panoramic view of the city, and can even see Kansai International Airport and Awaji Island in the distance.
